The following by Bob Wilson...
Numbers
Low but High Enjoyment
"At
a secret location in Newport Pagnell, 15 survivors of the holocaust of 1971
(better know in the RAF as 223 entry at RAF Halton)
met again to celebrate thoughts of 36 years earlier, when even Keith Bass had a
full head of hair and Bob Wilson could see his
feet (maybe not, he was always short sighted). The numbers were low but
the enthusiasm for the evening was obvious to all
that had taken the time, effort and expense to be there.
Bob Rodham, master of ceremonies and sole instigator of bringing all his
ex 223 entry together (creator of the 223 website),
worked extremely hard for the rest of us to get drunk like we did all those
lifetimes ago. It’s not anyone’s place to say who
was the drunkest of all the ex brats, as telling tales is so unbecoming and
child like, so Ken’s secret is safe for another year
but f these middle-aged men tried to catch him up quickly, fortunately most
failed to match him.
The
evening started with a superb buffet and ended with 15 old brats leaning against
the bar, while their wives talked about
more sensible items. The group reminisced as though it was an Olympic
sport, in fact two were taken away for an IOC drugs
test, but the laughs these memories induced were priceless, as one said to
another “do you remember when…” and someone
else would counter with “yeah, but what about when he…”, we were all
transported back to those early 1970’s when we were
young and innocent and when sharing a room with someone produced a bond that has
lasted 36 years.
Roll on the next reunion, when we can be taken back to bull nights,
bullshit and booze and when 223 was not just a position
in the Karma Sutra (I do not advise anyone to try it, I dislodged three
vertebrae and ended up with athlete’s mouth) but a group
of like minded young men from all walks of life and from all over Britain, who
studied hard (for minutes at a time) and were
model apprentices (Airfix kit 798/02)."
